Middlesex Men's Seniors finish solid season

Middlesex Seniors welcomed Herts Seniors to West Middlesex on August 16th, in the knowledge that a historically elusive win might mean a first league victory in aeons. We knew it would be tough when we saw their team line-up, with ex-county stalwarts as debutants, as well as familiar old boys. Captain CK was non-playing this time but instead bringing in player Gary Carter and newly crowned County Champion Tom Griffin of Crews Hill. Dele Kukoyi of Mill Hill also made his debut, raising eyebrows on the Herts Team with his youthful skin and flat stomach!

Out on the course, things were pretty tight. Mick McCormick led us out against county champion and +1 golfer John Ambridge and fought valiantly but ended up losing 1 down. Tom Griffin got the job done on his debut, seeing off Paul Nancarrow 2 &1. The next two matches went to Herts with Nick Clarke losing on 18 and Matt Bayford losing on, err, 11. Gary Carter and Don Giovanni Fletcher managed to secure points for Middlesex, with Gary winning 2 & 1 and Don holding his nerve with a slippery 2-foot downhiller on the last to win 1 up. This man knows how to close it out.

So, at 3-3 with 4 matches still out on the course, CK was skipping around the 18th like a West Midds bunny. He didn’t have to wait long as the next 2 matches also came to the 18th, with Bill Carey losing 1 down and Dele making a great up and down from the front of the green and tapping in for his 18th putt of the day and a 1-up win on his debut. At 4-4, we had some hope but it was not to be, with Gary Nash and Dave Hale not able to make headway and Middlesex losing out 6-4 in the end.

A strong season though from Middlesex, and a bright future ahead with this squad of players as well as new faces coming through next year. Special mention to Mick McCormick and West Middlesex, who provided a course in splendid condition and a fine meal afterwards.

It was appreciated that West Middlesex Golf Club accommodated the venue change on short notice. Their course condition was great as their green staffs were well prepared for the match.
